Under Singapore's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for e-waste, ICT equipment including printers falls under regulated categories. That means they shouldn't end up in general waste bins or at the bottom of a blue recycling bin.

The national e-waste collection bins you see at community centres and electronics retailers? They're designed for small items — phones, cables, keyboards. A full-sized multifunction printer or a floor-standing office laser unit won't physically fit. And even a compact inkjet is often too bulky for those slots.

So what's the path? For individual units, you can check for producer take-back programmes or scheduled e-waste collection drives. For anything larger, or if you simply want it gone without the runaround, a pickup service handles the routing through proper recycling channels.

Toner and ink cartridges need separate handling

This is the part most people skip. Toner cartridges — especially from laser printers — contain fine powder that can leak during transport if the cartridge is cracked or improperly sealed. That powder gets everywhere. On your hands, your clothes, your lift lobby floor.

Ink cartridges from inkjets are less messy but still shouldn't go into general waste. They have their own recycling path, separate from the printer body itself.

Before any disposal or pickup:

Remove all cartridges (ink and toner)
Seal toner cartridges in a plastic bag — even a grocery bag works
Keep them separate from the printer body

We've seen toner leak inside lorries, inside lifts, across HDB corridors. It's a fine black or cyan dust that stains grout. A thirty-second removal step saves everyone a headache.

HDB vs Condo: The Logistics Differ

No service lift here. Your printer goes through the same passenger lift everyone uses, or down the stairwell if you're in a walk-up block. For a standard desktop inkjet, that's manageable. For a 40kg office multifunction unit? That's a two-person job minimum, and you'll want to protect the corridor floor from toner residue if the cartridge wasn't removed.

Town councils will collect bulky items — but only if you've dismantled them first and placed them at designated collection points on scheduled days. A whole printer sitting at the void deck doesn't qualify for free TC pickup unless it's been broken down. And frankly, cracking open a laser printer without knowing what you're doing risks toner spills and sharp internal components.

Condos and commercial buildings

Rules differ per building. Your MCST may require advance booking of the service lift, specific time windows for bulky item removal, or lift padding for heavy equipment. That's on you to arrange with your management office before the pickup day. We can't liaise with building management on your behalf — every condo has its own procedures.

For commercial tenants clearing multiple printers (we've done batches of 15–20 units from single offices), check whether your building has a loading bay time slot system. Some newer office towers in the CBD restrict disposal movements to before 9am or after 6pm.

Common Mistakes We've Seen Over 10+ Years

1. Leaving toner cartridges installed during transport. We mentioned it. We'll mention it again. The mess is real. One cracked cartridge in a bumpy lorry ride can coat everything else in the load.

2. Assuming the blue recycling bin accepts printers. It doesn't. Those bins are for paper, plastic bottles, and cans. Electronics — even small ones — go through e-waste channels.

3. Waiting for "one more thing" to justify a pickup. People hold onto a dead printer for months thinking they'll accumulate enough junk to "make it worth calling someone." One printer, one scanner, a box of old cables — that's already a job. No need to hoard.

4. Not checking the paper tray. You'd be surprised how often we find documents still in the output tray or feeder. Bank statements, IC copies, medical letters. Clear your paper trays before anything leaves your home.

Can I put a small inkjet printer in the e-waste bin at my CC? If it physically fits through the slot — some compact models might. But most standard printers won't. And you still need to remove the cartridges first.
